      DBX 234XL Crossover details

Behringer DBX 234XL specificationsLet’s take a look at the construction features of the dbx® 234XL. At first glance you’ll notice the units are great looking, and as you turn the controls something else becomes apparent; these units are extremely well built. The controls exude great precision, and the feel is a solid “click”. Also, when you open the box, you won’t find the external power supply that accompanies most processors in this price range.

      powersupplies

That’s because we know how difficult external powersupplies can be to work with and even though it costs a little more we put the high quality power supply right in the unit. All the inputs and outputs are XLR balanced jacks that are bolted down to the chassis. This “nutting down” of the jacks insures that even if someone steps on a cable plugged into the unit, it’s not going to tear up the circuit board inside. All dbx® crossovers feature Linkwitz-Riley 24 dB per octave filters, the professional standard, but then again, what did you expect?

Behringer DBX 234XL best price kenyaback panel

Via two switches on the back panel you first select whether you’re operating your system in stereo 2-way, 3-way or mono 4-way. Another back panel switch also selects whether or not you want to mono sum the LF (subwoofer) out. (Most systems that use a subwoofer are mono subbed to take advantage of amplifier power and because low frequencies are non-directional.) Back panel switches allow you to select the range of the crossover frequencies individually for both channels. The crossover frequency controls have a green LED that indicates the X10 switch on the back panel is

      switch position

activated (we wouldn’t make you check the switch position on the back every time you wonder where it’s set). All these switches are on the back panel because it could be disastrous if you were to change them mid-program. On the front panel you’ll notice there are LEDs that indicate whether the unit is in mono or stereo mode. Each channel has an input gain control for proper level setting.

      Behringer crossoverremove unwanted low frequencies

There’s a recessed 40 Hz low cut (HPF) on each channel to remove unwanted low frequencies. Both the low and high outputs on each channel have a gain control ranging from – to +6 dB, to allow muting of individual outputs and for level matching. Also, these outputs each have phase reverse switches that’ll help get you out of a bind without having to reconfigure your system. These phase reverse switches may be internally reconfigured as mute switches.

      Behringer DBX 234XL

Behringer DBX 234XL Crossover: A Deep Dive

The Behringer DBX 234XL is a professional-grade, two-channel crossover designed for optimizing sound systems in live performance and studio applications. This in-depth preview will explore the features, functionalities, benefits, and potential drawbacks of the DBX 234XL, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of this versatile signal processor.

      Core functionalities:

      • Signal Routing and Splitting: The DBX 234XL acts as an electronic crossover, dividing a full-range audio signal into specific frequency bands. This allows you to direct these bands to separate amplifiers and speaker systems, resulting in more precise control over the sound in your venue.
      • Multi-mode Operation: The unit offers selectable modes for flexible use. You can choose between:
        • Mono 4-way: This mode splits the signal into four frequency bands (typically Low, Mid Low, Mid High, and High) ideal for complex multi-speaker setups like four-way PA systems.
        • Stereo 2-way: This mode splits the signal into two frequency bands (High and Low) for each channel, suitable for stereo speaker systems with separate subwoofers.
        • Stereo 3-way: This mode functions similarly to stereo 2-way but with an additional Mid band, offering more control for stereo PA systems with separate mid-range speakers.

      Behringer DBX 234XL Signal processor

      • Frequency Selection and Filtering: The DBX 234XL provides independent controls for each output band, allowing you to set the specific crossover frequencies where the signal splits. This enables you to tailor the sound to your speakers’ capabilities and optimize overall system performance.
      • Linkwitz-Riley Filters: The unit employs 24dB per octave Linkwitz-Riley filters. This industry-standard filter type ensures smooth and predictable transitions between the divided frequency bands, minimizing phase cancellation and creating a more natural-sounding audio experience.
      • Level Control: Each output on the DBX 234XL boasts its own level control. This grants you the ability to adjust the volume of each frequency band after the crossover point. This is particularly beneficial for balancing the sound between different speaker components and achieving a cohesive soundscape.
      • Subwoofer Output: The 4-way mono mode features a dedicated summed subwoofer output. This combines the low-frequency information from all bands, creating a powerful and well-defined low-end foundation for your sound system.
      • Additional Features:
        • XLR balanced inputs and outputs: These connectors provide a robust and professional connection method that reduces unwanted noise and interference.
        • x10 range switch on both channels: This switch allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the unit to accommodate various input signal levels.
        • 40Hz high-pass filter: This filter removes unwanted low-frequency rumble from the main outputs, protecting your speakers and improving overall sonic clarity.
        • Phase reverse switch on all outputs: This switch helps to correct phase issues that can occur between speakers, ensuring a coherent and well-defined stereo image.
        • Stereo/Mono status LEDs: These LEDs provide a clear visual indication of the selected operating mode.

Benefits of using the DBX 234XL:

      • Improved Sound Quality: Precise frequency division and level control enhance overall system clarity and prevent speaker overloading. The Linkwitz-Riley filters ensure smooth transitions and minimize phase cancellation.
      • Speaker Optimization: Directing specific frequencies to appropriate speakers protects them from damage and allows them to operate within their optimal range.
      • System Flexibility: The multiple operating modes cater to various speaker configurations, offering a solution for live sound reinforcement and studio setups.
      • Subwoofer Integration: The dedicated subwoofer output simplifies subwoofer integration into your sound system, delivering a powerful and controlled low-end response.
      • Professional Features: Balanced connections, level control, and phase reverse switches provide the tools needed for professional-grade audio management.
